I purchased this set for my boat, as I always like to have a basic set of tools on hand for emergencies. Set is well stocked, considering you can achieve the ratchet is all 1/4″ 3/8″ and 1/2″ drive. Short throw on the ratchet leangth, but for my aplication, this is a well diverse set that will handle the majority of repair needs, at an affordable price. I use many Cobalt tools on my service truck as well, as they are well thought out and way cheeper than Snap-on ,Mac, Matco, Cornwell, Etc. I added some basic plyers, crimpers, and such to make a complete basic set. I trust and rely on Cobalt tools, and they have a good warranty, making them a one time purchase. I would recomend them to anyone needing a basic set of sockets for a simular situation, and if your needs exceed the use of this set, then your probably going to want to step up to a pro series set and more complete tooling set.

I’ve recently began purchasing Kobalt tools from . I’m a long time user of Craftsman so it’s my first socket set purchase that is non-Craftsman. The case is small and compact but does not have a handle. I would be easier to carry if a handle was provided but that may take away from the compact size of the case. Rather than just a plastic hinge the case has a metal rod as a hinge in the case. This should make the case more durable over time over just a plastic hinge and plastic latch that, through experience, breaks over time. The tools are held solidly in the case so they stay in the case, at least in moderate shaking or dropping if the case were open wouldn’t spill the contents. Metric and SAE are clearly marked red and blue to differentiate in the two. The sizes,unlike other markings on the sockets, aren’t “engraved” into the metal. Since this set is relatively new it’s uncertain as to whether this will wear off over time making it difficult to determine size of sockets over time. The ratchet itself has a nicely sized direction level and the sockets lock on and off with a release button located on the back. An older socket set that that doesn’t have the locking feature was a bit frustrating as sockets would come off easily in more difficult jobs so this is a nice feature. This set was purchased more for light use in the house so it may not be put to the test as the socket set used on vehicle maintenance and repair. The lifetime warranty guarantee much like the Craftsman should provide great support through the years. For the price I would recommend this socket set.

I genuinely think the ratchet is an awesome idea. For anyone else readying the other reviews. They fixed the case issues. All of my sockets fit well inside the box and only one or two was always jumping out of place….. Now onto the reason I am returning it. I was only looking for a 1/2in drive ratchet and socket set. This was the cheapest kit available that contained both metric and SAE. No problem…BIGGEST PROBLEM and the reason I won’t keep it. Try and fit any other kind of half inch socket on the ratchet….lol it won’t work. You have to use these semi-deep well designed sockets…nothing else will work….

This review is of the Kobalt Pro90 Ratchet, 3/8” drive, 40 piece Mechanics Tool Set, part number 0573338. It is manufactured in China and the label on the rather substantial and compact plastic case states Life time Hassel Free Guarantee. The heavily built case should provide excellent storage and transport for a long time. The individual compartments are well sized and should make proper storage easy.
The kit consists of: one ratchet handle, one six inch extension, a 5/8 inch spark plug socket, ten deep well metric sockets (10-19 mm), 6 deep well SAE sockets (7/16 – ¾ inch), eleven shallow well metric sockets ( 9 – 19mm), and 10 shallow well SAE sockets (5/16 – 7/8 inch).
The ratchet handle is seven inches long, heavily built and has a button on the head that activates a retention piece which insures that the socket cannot come off accidently. The button must be depressed in order to place or remove a socket. The head of the ratchet has a direction switch which is partially recessed and helps insure that it is not accidently reversed. It also has a “neutral” position which locks the ratchet mechanism, so that it does not ratchet in either direction. (This could come in handy when trying to loosen stuck bolts) The switch moves easily and positively.
The sockets are highly polished chrome and feel well made. The SAE sockets have a red band around the base while the metric sockets have a blue band which should simplify identification. The brand KOBALT and the part numbers are heavily stamped into each part. The only downside to this set of sockets that I can find is the fact that the size of the socket is etched onto the parts rather than stamped into them. I found the sizes difficult to see clearly, particularly in low light. Had the sockets been stamped with the size instead of etched, I would have given this product 5 stars rather than 4.
All in all this appears to be an excellent, well build, set of sockets which should last indefinitely.

I needed to replace my worn out 3/8” ratchet. Went to Lowe’s for a Kobalt ratchet. This kit was only a few dollars more than the ratchet alone. I am very satisfied with the quality and value of this kit.

Very nice set. Certainly a keeper. Very versatile for carrying in vehicle to swap out a battery. The downside is that there is only one clasp and it is very weak on this case. The clasp on the case is loose and falls off. It really should have two locking clasps or latches and the latch needs an improved design. Otherwise great set.

the set comes with all the peices and ps it mells GREAT! for me the set is blue on top (with the logo kobalt) and black (with sticker on the bottom) and that is perfect! and on TOP OF THAT the set hold everything firm so that when i open it all the way and look at both sides the blue and white at once at the same time i opened it flat and shook it to try to get the peices to fall out… NOTHING FELL thats great and what i needed. I love this set for its cheap price and good quality had no isses yet except one… The ratchet its self (the chrome)is a little bit chippped and flaking and there is a small dent on the sae 11/16 socket but thats ok. Over all great set kobalt If i need i would buy another one anytime i need (but im gonna get a bigger set since my friend offered me 40$ for it but yea i will buy another one if i need to

I purchased this 64-piece Kobalt socket set a year or so ago and keep it in the house garage for occasional use. I didn’t care for the ratchet, so I replaced it with a 3/8″ drive Craftsman along with a couple socket adapters. 3/8″/1/2″ and 3/8″/1/4″ which I like much better.
A few weeks ago, I need to remove a small nut which was 6mm. To my surprise the 6mm socket is defective. I’m assuming in the stamping process the socket got flipped and the 1/4″ drive is located on the socket end and the 6-point socket is where the 1/4″ drive attaches which make the socket completely useless.
I went to only to find out they no longer sell the individual 6mm socket, (part #338113). The associate provided me with a toll-free number for Kobalt customer service, (1-800-356-2258), which I later learned is a non-working toll-free number. No problem, I’ll go online and look it up myself. Ha! Good luck trying to contact Kobalt! I called 6 different customer service numbers listed online and reached everyone from a Lexus dealership to some non-profit organization to help the homeless.
Way too much frustration for a $2 socket. Buyer beware. When looking at Kobalt tools “Lifetime Warranty”, good luck trying to contact this company. For this reason, I’m giving this set a 3-star rating and do not recommend Kobalt tools.

I really like the set for road trips, but the ratchet sucks, sometimes it grabs other times not, almost like there’s a dead spot in it… I have only used it once on a 3/8 bolt…. no abuse.

Needed a good socket set while doing a race from Kentucky to Maine, The Great Race, and this worked out great. Case kept everything secure and in order and ratchet worked great. Had the common sizes needed to work on an old car. Lifetime warranty and cheaper than Craftsman were other perks
